The making of the perfect cinnamon roll ...

Updated: Jun 14, 2023

In 2020 I set one of my year goals to make the perfect cinnamon rolls. A friend had challenged me to a contest with their aunts famous cinnamon rolls and I was determined that mine would give her rolls some stiff competition. I was working full time and it was hard to find time to bake something so time consuming… but then Covid.

Many fellow Minnesotans can testify to the crazy happenings of Spring 2020, when our governor decided to lock down the state. All events were canceled, restaurants closed up, even parks and public spaces were put under lock and key. During this time, we weren’t able to attend church in person either, and although our church did a livestream each Sunday, we watched it from our home couch. Thus we called it “couch church”.

Before this, we usually rush out the door Sunday mornings trying to get to church on time ... with only a light quick breakfast and cup of coffee (essentials you know!) … but now with church not starting until 11 am and not having to drive there … suddenly I had lots of time on a Sunday morning! And what can be better on a restful Sunday morning than the perfect cinnamon roll and a cup of coffee?

So, I began the tradition of making a different recipe every Sunday morning for the next couple of months … and my family became my official (and very willing) taste testers. The questions always had to be answered: Too sweet? How’s the level of crunch? This frosting or another? Fluffy enough? Too dry … too gooey … more cinnamon… And through that, the perfect cinnamon roll was born. :)

I still play with flavors and try new things, but I always come back to the recipe I created the Spring of 2020. Using a brioche style dough, with the edition of a cooked milk paste that keeps the rolls soft longer ... these take awhile to make since the dough rises over 4 hours in all ... and sets overnight in the fridge. But they are worth all the effort in every bite of delicious cinnamon sugar yumminess!
